What a psychologist brings

More than somewhere to talk.

A psychologist is trained to understand how thoughts, emotions, behaviour, relationships, health and life experiences can interact. Therapy brings structured assessment, a shared explanation of the problem and evidence-informed ways of working towards change.

The psychologist’s role is not to tell you how to live. It is to help you make sense of what is happening, decide what matters, try practical strategies and review whether the work is helping.

01

Make sense of the pattern.
Understand what may have contributed to the difficulty and what may be keeping it going.

02

Create a shared direction.
Turn broad concerns into clear goals that matter in everyday life.

03

Support practical change.
Practise evidence-informed strategies matched to the person and the clinical formulation.

04

Review what is helping.
Check progress together and adjust the approach when needed.

What therapy involves

A shared understanding and an agreed plan.

Select each step to see how Clinical Psychologist-led therapy is developed and reviewed.

Step 01

Assessment

Understand the concerns, their history, the current context, strengths and what you would like to change.

Reasons people seek therapy

Start with what is affecting you.

Choose the closest concern for a brief explanation, or call if the concern does not fit neatly into a category.

A possible therapy focus

Anxiety or low mood

Therapy may help you understand patterns that keep distress going, build practical ways of responding and review whether change is occurring.

EMDR

Trauma-focused therapy is available.

Dr Ashleigh provides Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. EMDR is a structured therapy that includes assessment, preparation, memory processing and review. Suitability is discussed before EMDR begins.
