About EMDR
A structured trauma-focused therapy.
During EMDR, a person attends to aspects of a distressing memory while engaging in alternating left-right visual, auditory or tactile stimulation. The aim is to support further processing so the memory may become less immediate and distressing.
EMDR is not hypnosis. You remain awake, aware and able to pause.
- Detailed verbal retelling is not always required
- Preparation and readiness are assessed first
- Pacing and consent are maintained throughout
- Progress is reviewed within the broader treatment plan
Treatment process
How EMDR is provided.
Select a stage to see how assessment, preparation, processing and review work together.
Assessment
Understand history, current needs, safety, readiness and treatment goals before deciding whether EMDR is appropriate.
Suitability
EMDR is discussed before treatment begins.
EMDR is an evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, but it may not be the right first step for every person. Dr Ashleigh will discuss readiness, preferences, alternatives and whether preparation or another treatment is more appropriate.

Common EMDR questions.
Is EMDR hypnosis?
No. You remain awake, aware of the present and able to pause throughout the appointment.
Do I have to tell the whole story in detail?
Detailed verbal retelling is not always required. Enough context is discussed to assess safety, readiness and a suitable treatment plan.
Can I stop or pause?
Yes. Pacing and consent are maintained throughout, and you can ask to pause at any time.
Is EMDR right for everyone?
No. Suitability depends on the person, current circumstances, treatment goals and readiness. Alternatives are discussed when EMDR is not the best first step.
